That’s right – any guitars booked in for a re-string service at the Maidenhead branch of Sheargolds before the end of September will get the strings for free.
Why? We’re trying to promote the importance of regularly re-stringing your guitar(s) and while we’re technically out of recession, times are still a little hard so we’d like to help out.

Re-stringing your guitar keeps the sound as good as it can be, and ensures that the quality of your instrument – and playing! – is not compromised. Over time, guitar strings naturally stretch, gather rust and tarnish, so it’s worth changing them every 1-2 months if you play regularly, or every 3-4 months if you play occasionally.

It only costs £10 to have your guitar re-strung at Sheargolds, but if you want to try it yourself, order a discounted set of strings from our website and check out the handy video guide on each product page here.

If you have any tips, questions, or general thoughts about re-stringing and guitar maintenance, leave us a comment below! Please use the links to pass this blog on to anyone who might be interested in this exciting deal.

We’ve all know what air guitar is and have all played air guitar at some point in our lives but have you ever played air piano? There are a number of different ideas behind air piano and some people take it to the extremes! There are many different ways of playing the piano, some with your hands, some your feet, and if you’ve ever watched the film “Big” then you will have seen Tom Hanks playing the piano on the floor by jumping up and down on the keys.

After cleaning out a second hand piano that came in recently we discovered a new way of playing the piano! The air piano technique we have designed comprises of a piano with no top door and a compressor! You simply turn it on and off you go!

There is another version of air piano designed by a chap called Omer Yosha who has invented a device that lets you play the piano without actually touching a key or anything by the use of infrared technology!

The air piano detects movements from your hands and fingers, and plays the notes based on the movements of your hands. Leaving your hand hovering over a spot on the air piano will sustain the note. Changing octaves is easy just by raising or lowering your hand over one of the sensors.

Have you ever played the piano in a weird any wacky way? If so, we would love to hear about it!

I write from a funky hotel in downtown Frankfurt after 2 days looking aound the annual music show known as the Music Messe. After miles and miles of walking round the various halls there are a number of things I thought would be worth reporting on.

We have the brandew CN range of digital pianos from Kawai with the CN23 and CN33. These models replace he CN22 and CN32 respectively. Developments in these new models include the new piano sample (featured in the new Kawai CA63 and CA93), and Ivory touch keys, which are much more realistic feeling than the previous model. The CN23 features a great 40w speaker, which is far superior from its previous model. These models will be available in rosewood, cherry, mahogany, and black satin, and the best news is that the CN23 will cost no more than the CN22 – result!
For more information visit: http://www.sheargoldmusic.co.uk/p-1357-kawai-cn23.aspx

As with all manufactured goods, the more you pay for a product generally reflects the overall quality. In the case of acoustic pianos, this can mean where it was built, the size of the cabinet – which also refers to the length of the string and therefore the quality and tone of the piano’s sound – the materials used for each part of the piano, and many other factors. In general, you pay more for pianos built in countries like Germany or Japan than China or Indonesia, as this can reflect the quality of the manufacture, right down to the attention to detail paid to the placing and fine tuning of action parts or even the hand-finishing of the wooden cabinet.

With digital pianos, the price is much more likely to reflect the number of features available and the quality of three main factors; the action, the piano sound, and the amplification used to reproduce that sound. For example, while many basic digital pianos will have a handful of voices, a metronome, small lower-quality speakers and a less responsive or realistic action, as you go up any manufacturer’s range you will find a much bigger selection of voices – along with effects and ways to control how each voice sounds – along with extra features such as recording functions, accompaniments, increased connectivity options, high quality speakers and a more realistic action, often with wooden keys.

It depends on the finish of your piano’s cabinet. If, like many modern pianos, it has a polyester lacquer, you can clean easily by lightly rubbing the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth. Clean in long, straight lines rather than circles and exert as little pressure as possible – on this kind of finish, even dust can scratch. For a satin finish, you will find that dust and fingerprints are much less visible, but it is worth dusting the piano regularly to keep the wood clean. You can also use an anti-static cleaner or light polish on gloss or laquer finished cabinets. Keys should be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth.
